Comments:A good ship and crew. Had a great time in Kaoshiung
and Hong Kong. While looking over the crew list I recognized a
few names that brought back some funny memories. One of them
is when I got discharged from the ship in San Diego. I had
been telling some of the guys in the forward fireroom that I
wasn't going to leave with a heavy seabag like I came onboard
with so I got rid of lots of stuff. I was surprised that my
bag was still so heavy as I walked down the pier. After I got
to the hotel I found out why it was so damn heavy----Nieto
BT1, had the guys put several heavy old steam traps into my
bag. Had a good laugh but didn't know what to do with them so
I shoved them under the bed. I often wondered what the maid
thought later?

Comments:The day I came aboard HT3 Melvin Walker checked
aboard. He was always being called to the ships office "Petty
Officer Walker" then "PO3 Walker" then "PO3 M. Walker" finally
"HT3 Walker."
Remember CS3 Murry and how good he was at remembering how we
wanted our eggs?
Riding out a typhoon trailing a screw.
I remember the night I had 3 helping of soukraut and 3 glasses
of milk and we were doing 30 degree rolls. I didn't throw up
but I was miserable.
Waiting to come into San Diego and doing a 47 degree roll.
I retired from the Navy in 95 with 20 yrs active and 3 1/2
Army Reserve.

Comments:Hello there fellow shipmates.
Lots of memories of my 3 Westpac tours aboard the Parks.
I still have 2 cruise books from 69 & 71. I'll never forget
looking at the cracked main keel beam in aft engine room on
our last cruise.(And thinking oh SH!!) I believe the blade
braking off the starboard screw had something to do with that.
But she got us home again safe and sound thanks in part to a
great crew.

Control group still around get in touch with me as I would
love to hear from you. There were Salvatore Di'Maggio Albany
NY area, William O'Connel Kansas City area H.P.Cole FC 1C John
Mc Farland, all Plank owners. There were many interesting
events that I was aware of, some of them were funny some
serious and all of them are memories I will never forget.
like,
When we ran into the dock in Pensacola
Almost torpedowed a sister ship on our shake down cruise
Came very very close to shooting the tail off the plane towing
a sleeve the JA circuit had some colorful language from the
pilot,
literally lifting the stern out of the water when an ashcan
was set for 15 feet instead of 150 feet,
Running aground off Oahu while on a radar test run on Diamond
head,
Trying to avoid being blown to smitherines by a floating mine
literally bouncing against the side amidship out in the middle
of the ocean,
running into the British destroyer destroying their Captains
Gig and a lot of their railing as we slid along the side of
their ship in Hong Kong Harbor while trying to tie up to them.

Comments:Came aboard as second class had passed the first
class test was waiting for my promotion went on the mid waych
wearing my first class crow, everybody wanted to know how come
I was wearing a first class crow I explained,after I got off
of watch and after muster I went to the hanger used as a first
class mess, boy did I create a stir.the first class personlman
talked to me amd asled me when I made fist I told him today.
later on he got a hold of me and said there was nothing in my
record, but I could still wear the crow but would not get paid
for it untill it was verified. It too one month to get it
verafied.after arriving in pearl MM1 Larry moore ended up in
the hosp. and the ship was notified that he would not be
making WESTPAC. I ended up as work center supervisor in after
engine room, the guys were very well trained and knew that
plant inside out.I ended up becoming good friends wit Bob
Canfield. That man kept me in stitches the whole time I knew
him.Was sad to see him go. Any how would love to hear from any
body who remembered me. wewnt to Sandiego reunion 95 or6, went
to Portland Maine, attended San Antonio. Plan on being in

Comments:Just wanted to tell all of you what a great time
Barbara & I had at this years San Antonio reunion. We had not
been in San Antonio for a long time and we thoroughly enjoyed
the drive out there and the time we spent there. We also had a
chance to visit some of my cousins while there. I want to take
the time to thank all those involved in making it a very
memorable reunion and a great time, Bill & Sue, Larry & Kate,
Keith Knoblock, Sam Villa, Harry, Markus & Donna, Don & Jane,
Tom & Linda, Robert & Missy, Jim & Kay, Capt. Erner & Alison &
all of the rest of you that I have failed to mention here.
This was our first reunion & we really enjoyed our time spent
getting reaquainted with old friends and making new friends.
The food was good and the sites and entertainment was great.
The Holiday Inn International and staff were great to us and
very accomadating. Thank you Capt. Erner for participating in
the ceremony at the Nimitz Museum. It was really great to have
the Floyd B Parks plaque embedded into the wall of honor at
the Admiral Nimitz Museum. My grandkids really enjoyed the
trinkets we brought back to them and hearing of our trip. We
hope to hear from you all once in awhile and you are always
welcome to write, email or call anytime. Barbara & I hope to
see you all in Boise, Id for the next reunion in 2010 and
those that did not get to make this years reunion, we hope to
see at that one.

Comments:The Parks was my First (and only) ship fresh out of
boot. All I can remember was chipping and painting and
wondering why, since she was on her way to mothballs. Filled
out my drean sheet just before decom and moved on to the
SeaBees. 37 years ago and I slill remember a few names. Larry
Moon (also went on to the SeaBees). Walt Czaplicki (ended up
at goone bird Island). A guy named Dunwoody who at age 17 I
remember looking up to but never knew what became of him and
Cruise the guy who was good with a knife.
My son told me about this site and even ordered me a hat for
fathers day. Somehow I just don't feel worthy wairing it,
after I read all 60 pages of the ships log. I never realize I
was on such a proud ship with so much history. I guess I can
ware it even though my time was short I can say I to was on

you its more fun than port and starboard watches and the food
is alot better. I also heard a rumor that the Birdsongs are
giving away a one week vacation at their farm in sunny Calif
as door prize next year.
Seriously this Association is terrific. They are alway there
with a kind word and prayer when things aren't going well for
you and a laugh when they are.
See You In Texas

Comments:I'm not sure how many ever heard of some of the
events that happened in the great history of our good old
Floyd B Parks. I spent the first two years aboard her and it
was the greatest years of my life. During the shakedown cruise
we came close to shooting the tail off the sleeve tow plane,
and you should have heard that pilots comments (:x?). Then
while coming into the dock at Pensacola while the band played
Anchors Aweigh we ran into the dock pilings shattering
some, glancing off those only to hit the next set and finally
coming to a stop. In the meantime the band tailed off in the
middle of the song and the applause for our arrival died
out.We had coffee and donuts from the Great USO trailer.
There were many more incidents I recall. Some you might enjoy
hearing about. Hope to see you in Portland.

However I grew up in the same town as Major Floyd B. Parks.
His mother was a part of our distant family. My cousin & I
place flowers on her grave each year.
I am attempting to collect information that I will donate to
our Chariton County Historical Museum.

I intend to make a memorial to him and his adopted sons who
served aboard the USS Floyd B Parks.
I am a Marine 0311 served 1969-1970.
Returned to my home and now driving a school bus to the same
school system that Maj. Floyd B. Parks attended. Most people
in the coumunity are clueless about the great men who have
made our freedom that we enjoy today.
Thanks for your great work.

Comments:I just found the website for the first time and WOW
am I impressed. I went aboard the Parks in Bremerton while she
was finishing up in dry docks with the FRAM 1. When we took
her out on the first "shake down" with all of the engineers
aboard, they forgot who was "driving" the car. We were headed
for a bell bouy in Puget Sound and nobody could decide on when
it would be time to turn. When they finally started the turn
the fantail came around and hit the concrete pileing holding
the bouy. That took a very large chunk out of our brand new
"high Speed" port screw. Back to the dry docks because we also
had a leak in the new sonar dome. I've got a few "Polaroid"
pictures that I wasn't supposed to be taking but they make
great history now.

Comments:My father, John J. Gordon, was the USS Floyd B.
Parks's medical officer during the Korean War. I was 6-month's
old during his first deployment. He later told me about the
cruise out when the Parks encountered a typhoon in the North
Pacific. Nearly the whole crew got seasick as the "tin can"
got heaved to and fro in heavy seas. The vomit in quarters and
the crew-ways slopped forward and aft with each wave. Dad did
his duty and administered aid to all the crew, thankful that
at least he wasn't affected. But the seas finally got to him
and he took to his bunk, sea-sick for the first time in his
life. He said it was an awful experience.
The seas finally quieted, and the Floyd B. Parks's crew all
recovered, and they did their duty off the Korean Peninsula
during that "forgotten" war.
My hat is off to every sailor, chief, and officer who served
on the Floyd B. Parks.
Sincerely,
Andrew Gordon

Comments:Some of my fondest memories come from being on board
the Parks. I went on board when it was going through Fram in
Bremerton, Wash in late Jan or early Feb 1963. Even with all
of the rain I loved that area of the country because it was so
beautiful. We left there and went to San Diego and shortly
after that we went on a Westpac Cruse. Never will forget the
smell coming in to land after the crossing. We first went to
Kaohsiung, Taiwan and you could smell that place10 or 20 miles
out to sea. I never will forget that I was on watch the night
President Kennedy was assassinated. I was a RM3 radio operator
and I was on watch with RM2 Roberts, can’t remember his first
name, and we were listening to Radio Manila when we heard the
announcer say that President Kennedy had just been shot. Both
of us set straight up in our chairs and stared at the radio
not believing what had just been said and he said it again. We
checked out teletypes and there was nothing on them so I went
down the passage way and woke up Commodore Silk and Roberts
went to Capt Cobb’s state room and woke him up. We all
gathered in the radio shack and listened to the news, all of
us in a state of shock. It was about two hours later when we
got a flash message putting us on a War Footing. I remember
when I went to wake the crew in my section that they called me
a liar and would believe me and then the Capt made the
announcement over the PA and you could see tears forming in
the eyes of our great crew. It is a time that I will never
forget.

Transported the Admiral once from the Floyd back to the

lot of you guys I sailed with. Wish I could find others, where
are you Larry White, Tony Sweeny,Frank Nixon, A-gang members?

Comments:I am so glad I found your website, as I have been
lately researching for something associated with the "Floyd
B". I just stumbled on it. I served aboard the Floyd B from
1970-1972 and made 21/2 WestPacs to Nam. I came aboard as an
ENFN but finally made it to EN2 before leaving. I was saddened
to hear a few years after I mustered out that the old gal had
been decommissioned, but could never find out about her final
disposition, until recently, while actively researching for
info on her. There are a lot of old memories associated with
the USS Floyd B Parks DD884 and I lost touch with so many of
my old shipboard mates and have always wished I could find
some of them and renew old friendships. Maybe some day I will
still have that opportunity. I'll try to come back again when
I have more time. Thanks, Gary B786240

F.B. Parks came into Seattle for "Seafair" - must have been
the summer of 1954 - anyone remember that? We lived in Madison
Park across from the beach and it was open house for the crew
while the ship was in Seattle. I remember laundry being washed
and lots of white hats hanging on the clothes lines in the
back yard!! Mom received wonderful thank- you letters and
Christmas cards from the guys who had enjoyed her spaghetti
dinners and hospitality for several years after that summer.
One name stands out - Bob Silva - any idea what happened to
him?
My brother retired from the Navy in June, 1972. He has had

Made a lot of great friends that I would like to get in touch

valve, make kool-aid in a coffee can. But remember eng. only
barrowed from supply, never stold it. Boiler tech's make great
smoke, 30 knots, no smoke, in your dreams!!!!!!!!!!!

Comments:I served aboard the Parks from 1966 to 1970 when I
was discharged. I made three WEST PAC cruises :-)
I remember being in Danang and the motor whale boat making
many trips to shore. I also remember spent bullets from the
Cong splashing in the water around the ship :-0
We where part of the 'Blue Water Navy' traveling the open
oceans, we where also part of the 'Brown Water Navy' when the
Captain had the ship traveling up river outlets for gun runs.
Does anyone remember when we did this 'river run(s)'? We had
men on the bow taking water depth readings with a fathom line,
and one night after a movie on the mess deck a Cong junk
opened fire on us with a .30 cal machine gun. We turned them
to toothpicks with .50 cal and a 5"/38 round.
Do you recall any of this? The two ways to verify exposure to
Agent Orange are:
1. Set foot on Vietnam soil (you on the motorwhale boat).
2. Been inland in Vietnam ('Brown Water Navy' gun runs).
Please let me know if anyone remembers any of this, dates
would be helpful.

fond memories of my time there. One of my shipmates was George
Gregory of Seattle, Wn. He introduced me to his sister
Beverly, while we were in FRAM in Bremerton, Wn. We married in
1975 and will celebrate on 30th in May of 05. While mess
cooking, I met Joe Miller. After working 60 days in the
scullery together we we became very close. We have been bet of
friends for over 40 years. Also, from time to time I see other
shipmates while on vacation or at reunions. I remember Captain
O'Neill. Since he was the CO and I was an S.A. in deck
division, we didn't "hang together". I later met him at a mini
reunion in San Diego and then again at the Reno reunion in 02.
What a class act he is. A real gentleman. I also recall what
idiots the boatswain mate POs were. My short time there was a
great experience. Lastly, I remember being drunk alot, I
think.

I joined the Parks while it was in drydock in Long Beach, CA.
We then moved to San Diego, did some training and then did a
WESTPAC tour.
Will never forget the great fun of chiping paint with those
numatic paint chippers and wire brushes. (Don't think my
hearing has ever been the same since.) (I dazzled BM1 Cooper
and BM3 Augusta with my extra shiny hatch door. Ha!)
Working with PN1 Ylagan, YN3 Parker and all the others in the
ships office was great.
Most memorable event.........the Typhoon we "enjoyed" after
leaving Midway Island. (I think everyone was some shade of
green during that one.)
Sorry I missed the Portland reunion....couldn't have been any

what happened in life for the guys I served with---"Flash"
(RDSN Berg) is in Florida last I heard, serving as a
corrections officer, following a long career in the USN.
Always wondered if Ratman ever got to fly commercial
jetliners. And I've still got a picture of Randy Scuria
(ETN3)holding his breath 'till he turned blue! (His constant
threat to Dave Cain's sister...)
There's more memories than can be put down here---but to all
the guys, my best wishes for health and happiness!
And for anyone who might wonder, I'm fortunate to have both
here in Colorado, where I command my own little 'glass ship on
the reservoirs here and in Wyoming.

Comments:I came aboard in late December 1959 when the Parks
was in dry dock in Long Beach. It was my first ship and it
looked really big from the dry dock floor. But I got over that
when we went to sea the first time.
I remember that first time at sea. There was a crowd around
the midships passageway where a cook had a greasy pork chop in
his hand. He would walk up to the new guys and offer it to
them. Most of them turned a little green. I took the pork chop
and took a big bite of it. That made two of the other new guys
run for the rail.
It was in the first part of 1961 when a very sad thing
happened. John W. Sullivan from one of the engineering
divisions was killed in a motorcycle wreck. He was a
wonderful, thoughtful man and his death was a tragedy.
I was aboard on December 7, 1961, the 20th anniversary of
Pearl Harbor when we tried to rescue a Japanese fishing boat.
Its screw had fallen off and there was a big storm blowing. We
tried to pass them a wire to take them under tow. But a big
wave washed over the stern and brought ten or twelve of us up
against the aft 5-inch gun mount and we gave it up as too
dangerous. We hung around until a real tug boat came and took
care of them.
I was on two WestPac cruises and my fondest memory was when we
docked in Pearl Harbor. There was a vendor on the dock selling
various things including quarts of milk. Milk! If you remember
just how bad the sterilized milk we had for the entire six
month cruise you’ll understand why he sold completely out of
milk within ten minutes. I had two quarts myself.
Towards the end of the second cruise I had finally escaped
from Deck Division to Fire Control and had every intention of
shipping over for six years in the STAR program. Even though
my parents had said they’d send me to college when I got out,
in my mind I was a lifer even though I hadn’t signed the
papers yet. It was coming close to the end of my “official”
enlistment and we were coming into Bremerton for FRAM. I met
the Yeoman coming down the deck who said “Hey Lyon, your
orders came in.” Orders? “Yeah, transfer to T.I. for
discharge.” Discharge. The word echoed through my mind like a
half-forgotten dream. Not two minutes later the Fire Control
officer came up to me and said “Lets go to the ship’s office
and get you reenlisted.” “Well sir, I’ve been thinking about
that.” I felt bad for him because he’d had a 100% reenlistment
record for two years and I ended his string of successes.
The ship was tied up in Bremerton with the bow pointed toward
the shore when I left the Parks. I carried my seabag down the
aft gangway and as I walked up the dock along the length of
the ship it seemed like all of my best friends were somehow on
deck waving goodbye. I passed the bow and never laid eyes on
the USS Floyd B Parks until 1972 when I was a merchant seaman
on the Steel King, an Isthmian Lines freighter docked in San
Diego. Seeing the Parks steam by returning from sea brought
back a flood of memories just as this wonderful web site has.
I was eighteen when I came on board the Parks and turned
twenty-one a week before I left the ship and I did a lot of
growing up on it. There were a lot of good memories there and
some were not so good. But when you have to learn your lessons
the hard way, memories are always mixed. I’ll never forget the
USS Floyd B Parks, the sights, the sounds, the men and even
the food. It may not have been the finest but it was there
three times a day and there was always enough of it.
The USS Floyd B. Parks DD-884. May she rest in peace.

Again thank you to everyone for all the help and I look

Comments:It was a pleasant surprise to "be discovered" by a
fellow ex-shipmate, Larry Larsen, who took the time to track
me down after 30 years! The folks with the DD884 Association
who have put all this organization together are doing a
marvelous job of keeping alive this piece of history. I
remember my years of service on DD884 both of good times and
bad times, but certainly with a sense of pride in a job well
done on my two Wespac tours. Hats off to Commanders Donovan,
McCulloch and Erner!
40 years after Vietnam, I wish our Nation had learned better
the hazards of "premeptive stikes". The parallels between the
Turner Joy/Maddox in the Tonkin Gulf and Baghdad are very
real. I also hope that we all now understand the distinction
between support for the troops (always 110%) and reasoned
dissent about our nation's foreign policy. Lest we forget,
Washington, Jefferson, Adams, Hamilton, Franklin et al were
anything but "loyal" in their own time, and we'd all still be
saluting the King of England if they had not been dissenters!
I still remember fondly the evening in the Tonkin Gulf when we
had the SPS10 surface search radar painting an 80 mile swath
of land and sea, looking like a navigation chart. I remember
fondly seeing those decrepit 20 year old radar repeaters
humming away in CIC. Most of all, I remember how Randy Scuria,
ETR2, probably saved all our collective asses during Operation
Linebacker when he had the ECM gear working right and it broke
off the NVA's fire control radar that was locked onto us!
Best regards,
Dan Keifer

Comments:#1 day in Vietman, Parks fired 3 star shells also he
and wp.I continued 6 months of fire... went south to harbor...
took out missile base on mountain... went north ran over
Vietnamese junk... fired flat into harbor... fired at entire
coast off Vietnam... on the ropes... sea detail... Tonkin
Gulf...I loaded skids of 5 inch rounds with ropes pulleys...
completely fired all rounds in one day. had to find USS Quebec
to get more ammo....chow was A+ on the Parks... movies ok...
Cool Hand Luke... Sand Pebbles... Fist Full of Dollars... I
won my smoker.... snipes, against deck apes... three rounds...
Parks had a small ships store on the fan tail... the parks
seemed to never stop sailing... I estimated 100,000 miles in 3
years... the Parks surfed across the ocean... we stood
quarter's under the gun mount and looked at a wave 40 feet
high and dragged the mops... the potato bin needed
improvement... Park's twin 33,000 hp steam turbines pushed her
through the ocean... in the Tonkin Gulf had a giant jelly fish
that assembled around the ship.
What an adventure you had aboard the mighty USS Floyd B.
Parks. I will add this seastory to the website soon. By the
way, I was in a smoker aboard the USS Providence and got
knocked out in 3 seconds. I knew then that boxing would never
be my profession.

It is a pleasure to be your Editor and Webmaster.
My objective:
...To create an Excellent Website that best represents the
crewmembers who served aboard the USS Floyd B. Parks.
...To provide a place for crewmembers, family and friends to
meet.
...A place for crewmembers to share their story.
...To preserve the history
...To honor our military.
God Bless our Military who go in harms way to protect our
country and God Bless America.
